Your road trip is on the map, stages are set, and the twisty line already makes you smile. Between a perfect screen route and a great day on the road, one step is often overlooked: preparation.

With a clear checklist, you leave with confidence — and avoid the forgotten gloves, under-inflated tyre, or dead GPS battery.


Motorcycle checklist: essentials before you turn the key

 

Do this 48 hours before departure, then a final check on the morning of.

Mechanics & safety

 

  •  Tyres — correct pressure (load + passenger + luggage), no cracks or abnormal wear
  •  Brakes — discs, pads, brake fluid level
  •  Chain / belt — tension and lubrication (chain)
  •  Engine oil — correct level
  •  Lights — headlights, indicators, brake light, plate light
  •  Mirrors — secure and adjusted
  •  Fuel — full tank or stations marked on your route
  •  Documents — licence, registration, insurance, MOT if required

Rider gear (non-negotiable)

 

  •  Approved helmet (under 5 years, good condition)
  •  Certified gloves
  •  Reinforced jacket (ideally with armour)
  •  Motorcycle trousers or knee protection
  •  Ankle boots

  •  Save the road trip with a clear title
  •  Check stage types: coffee (~20 min), meal (~1 h), overnight (next-day start 9 a.m.)
  •  Review distance, duration, and elevation on the timeline
  •  Check weather if a departure date is set
  •  Enable useful POIs: fuel, accommodation, passes, motorcycle garages
  •  Export GPX to your GPS (Garmin, TomTom, BMW Navigator…)
  •  Generate the route PDF (map + stages + stats)
  •  Share the itinerary with your riding buddies

Profile 1 — Day ride (under 200 km)

Profile 3 — Long-distance (5+ days)

 

  •  Panniers + top case (40/60 weight split)
  •  2–3 outfits, layering (warm / cool / rain)
  •  First-aid kit
  •  Repair kit: tube or sealant, basic tools
  •  Card + cash (tolls, parking)
  •  Digital copy of documents

On rydrway: export full GPX + keep PDF as backup; share via “My friends”.


Profile 4 — Mountains & passes

 

  •  Check pass opening (snow, roadworks — often April to October)
  •  Warm layers (winter gloves if leaving early)
  •  Brakes checked — long descents stress pads
  •  Charged phone for viewpoints

On rydrway: check the elevation profile and enable pass and viewpoint POIs.


The night before & departure morning

 

Night before (D-1)

 

  •  Weather checked along the full route
  •  Bookings confirmed
  •  GPS / app loaded, route imported
  •  Bike cleaned (lights visible, visual check easier)
  •  Sleep!

Morning of (15 minutes)

 

  •  Cold tyre pressure
  •  Quick fluid check
  •  Luggage secure, balanced load
  •  Phone charged
  •  Final glance at the rydrway timeline
